To recap from yesterday, I’m tired of always feeling like I’m totally out of clothes and haring a bare-bones wardrobe just because I never want to shell out a bunch of money at a time. And then when I do spend money, I feel like the clothes wear out so quickly. Which makes sense if you think about it, because one pair of pants is going to wear out a lot faster than if you have a few pairs on the go at once.
I bought quite a few clothes last year, so I actually have a lot of these pieces, I just wanted a big master list of all the different clothes I would like in my wardrobe at any one time. The next trick will be for me to get into the habit of actually getting rid of clothes when they are worn out instead of continuing to wear things that have holes in them for several months.
Another motive is that I feel like every time I buy clothes I gravitate towards the same items and then end up with too many of them, and never buy others. I have probably 8 casual dresses that I wear and only 1 pair of pants. Not because I like wearing dresses more, just because I don’t like ordering pants because I don’t know if they will fit. Hopefully this will steer me in the right direction.

What is the deal with summer and winter clothes? I wear my long-sleeve dresses in the summer and my short sleeve dresses in the winter with a long sleeve t underneath for warmth, but I get the feeling that I should have different clothes for different seasons? I switch out thinner socks for thicker socks, but that’s about it. I get the feeling that if I lived somewhere with temperate weather all year I could own fewer clothes because I could wear everything year round.
Obviously workwear is what I need the most, but I don’t need it yet, so I can take my time. I want to (slowly) fill the gaps, but don’t want to buy any clothes where gaps don’t exist. I will not have to buy pjs for approximately 10 years.
Let me know if any of these numbers sound crazy ridiculous… I don’t really know what I’m doing here, I’m just trying to think about what makes sense and mostly how often I want to do laundry.
What I’ve found works for me is when I buy new clothes (as rare as that happens), I get rid of a few more. Right before winter started as I was putting summer stuff away, I got rid of a whole bag of clothes in good condition that went into donations. Since then, I’ve bought a few summer items, and have a few winter ones that will go to donation once the weather changes again. I do use different clothes for the seasons… lots more wool, long sleeve, turtle necks of heavy fabric for the winter, and light, airy, short sleeved shirts for the summer. To that point, I think my wardrobes are completely separate, cold from warm. Perhaps it depends on where you live? Summers here are 100 degrees, and winters can get to the single digits… My bottoms (pants and shoes) work on both, except for the socks. I like this idea. Maybe I’ll itemize my stuff once the weather switching happens!
Some thoughts… FWIW, I’m not a big clothes person and my closet is tiny!
This is just a preference thing, but I wear running clothes to bed. Rather than a small and large purse, I have a (small) purse and then a work tote bag. For a relatively small wardrobe, you have lots of flip flops! Are you going to be in full suits or casual clothes? What about dress pants to go with your tops? Personally, I’ve gotten to the point where I rarely separate my suiting pieces- I only have one and I want it to look nice and fancy for when I need to be nice and fancy. You’ll only need tights for work if you have a skirt suit, right? Also, I have one all-purpose black dress (silk, and conservative) that works for everything from cocktail parties to funerals, and then I have one dress in a color that looks good on me, and isn’t too summery, so it basically works year-round.
